Artificial Sweeteners and Anxiety

Are artificial sweeteners like saccharin, aspartame and sucralose toxic? Studies show that artificially sweetened beverages increase risk of depression in adults. Aspartame intake has been associated with decrease production of certain neurotransmitters that help you to feel happy. It has also been connected to anxiety. This may be due to an increased production of the type of gut bacteria that provoke anxiety symptoms. A component of these “bad” bacteria called lipopolysaccharides can enter our blood stream, cross the blood brain barrier and cause anxiety behavior. Watch out for artificial sweeteners in beverages, yogurts and “health” foods. Instead of reaching for a can/container of chemical soup, try using a variety of fruits and vegetables to infuse filtered water. Use a small amount of natural sweetener such as pure maple syrup or honey to flavor plain yogurt. Your brain and body will thank you!
