Ok, so we may not be talking about THE lion’s mane when it comes to focus. We are actually talking about a fungus.

Lion’s mane mushrooms are a wispy looking white bunch, resembling a pom-pom. They have been studied for how they can help support memory, focus and cognitive function.

This can be a huge benefit since in the post-pandemic world, people complain of brain-fog more than ever. A survey published in Lancet’s EClinical Medicine, involving thousands of people who had suffered from Covid, reported a whopping 85% complained of brain fog.

How might lion’s mane mushrooms help?

Lion’s mane mushrooms contain nerve growth factor molecules that promote neuron health and neuroplasticity which can support memory and focus. In a double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial, regular intake of lion’s mane mushrooms led to reductions in cognitive decline. Other studies have demonstrated decreases in anxiety and depression when consuming lion’s mane mushrooms. In addition, lion’s mane mushrooms may reduce the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients which ultimately lead to further memory deterioration.

So how can you add this functional food to your diet?

Lion’s mane mushrooms have a mild, almost sweet flavor. Some even say they resemble the taste and texture of lobster when cooked. Lion’s mane mushrooms should be eaten cooked and not raw. The texture and flavor are best enhanced when cooked in a way that takes advantage of its sponge quality and ability to absorb flavorful liquids. Cooking them in soups, stews and sauces can create delicious dishes.

Finally, if you would like to get the benefit without having to go through all the cooking, lion’s mane mushroom powder is sold commercially. The powder can be added to smoothies, matcha, coffee or your favorite recipes.
